In celebration of our first quarterly issue, THE CREATIVITY ISSUE, we have asked some artists to share with us their thoughts on creativity and creative influences. Photography is one of the most sought-after forms of art, which is why gathering a few photographers for this issue to talk about creativity in photography was a must! We connected with photographers who are just starting out, and others with a few years of experience. This is what they think about creativity, and how it shows in their work.

Sharing Thoughts About Creativity in Photography

Musa Creativa (MC): Tell us about you and your work.

Felipe: I’m originally from Brazil. But I’ve lived in Orlando for almost 5 years. I have a Bachelors in Architecture and Urbanism. And I’ve worked in 5  companies for the past 9 years. Some of my favorite projects include hotels, Hospital residential buildings, and houses. In addition to that, I’ve always really enjoyed photography. And this hobby eventually became a second job. Today I work as an Architect on weekdays and as a Photographer on weekends. I love how being an architect helped me as a photographer and vice versa. Both of my interests go really well together.

MC: How is your personality reflected in your work?

Felipe: I really value creativity. Today I realize that as a kid I was always exercising my creativity without knowing. I grew up playing several instruments, playing sports, drawing, and learning from my mother (who is also an architect) new ways of solving challenges when building projects. I’m also a very positive and uplifting person as I’m constantly searching for the good in any situation. These personality traits reflect in my work as I’m very disciplined and enjoy working in a team (playing sports taught me that) and I’m always unintentionally trying to innovate.

MC: What is creativity to you?

Felipe: Creativity to me, is one of the most important skills a person can have. And just like any skill, it needs to be constantly exercised. I heard a quote once that said “Creativity is intelligence having fun” and I couldn’t agree more. I’d also add that creativity is a willingness to welcome new ideas and possibilities. It’s using intelligence but letting your imagination run free.

MC: How do you get into your creative zone?

Felipe: I had a professor that once assigned the class to write down 30 solutions to one problem. He explained to us that the first 10 or so solutions we’d write would be common unoriginal ones, but after 20 we would have no choice but to come up with completely different and unique ones. That stuck with me and I see now that my creative zone happens when I reach the point when I’m thinking completely outside the box and I exhausted all options that I thought of first. I also think that the more I travel, the more I expose myself to different experiences to more inspired I get.

Musa Creativa (MC): Tell us about you and your work.

Javier: My work is based on nature. I love taking pictures of nature and how diverse it can be. My major interest is water. Pictures of moving water like in the fountain are so interesting to me. Also going on hikes and finding how nature can be so beautiful even when you don’t see it at first.

MC: What is creativity to you?

Javier: Creativity to me is life. Since I can remember I was always making up stuff. I like to tell stories and create new scenarios. I remember as a child making a mess of my room with my toys. And I had a good craft story of what was going on at all times. My mom hated my mess, but for me, it wasn’t a mess it was the world I was creating. That passion drew me to film and eventually to photography. Life is creativity. Everything that can happen to you in life can inspire you to create something, no matter what that is.

MC: What elements of your life have influenced you as a Creative?

Javier: My passion to see the world and experience different places influences my creative side.

Inspiration comes from within. You can teach it or learn it.
