Art Talk with...
digital illustration brand launches amid pandemic

Art Talk with Digital Illustration Artist from New Zealand

Art is such a beautiful thing! There are so many different art forms in which creativity can just roam free. And this also applies to digital illustration art. We can’t deny that sometimes when we hear the term digital, we immediately think of something less creative. But this is not at all true! Digital artists are super creative yet also go through creative blocks just like any other artist.

In this edition of Art Talk, we talk with Zinnia, an Architect and digital illustration artist who has proven to be completely fearless and innovative amid the global pandemic. During the COVID-19 quarantine, she launched a new brand and her success has been incredible! Her story shows us that no matter what we might be going through, we can do anything we set our mind and heart to do!

Musa Creativa (MC): Tell us about you, and your work.

Zinnia: My name is Zinnia and I’m an Architect from New Zealand. I started my brand Stories by Z during the COVID quarantine after moving back from New York City. It was something I had been wanting to do for a really long time. I’m so proud of what it has become in such a small amount of time!

MC: Your digital illustration designs have a very happy vibe, which we love! What’s the main inspiration behind your art?

Zinnia: I like to channel my personality into my art. I would describe myself as a bubbly, quirky, and extroverted gal. Also, I like to inject a bit of randomness and humor into my captions and art. I like to bring awareness to current issues in a more casual way.

MC: Walk us through what your creative process is like.

Zinnia: I can be a little bit of a perfectionist– which is both a blessing and a curse. On average, one project can take approximately 5-8 hours. The general process involves looking for imagery that inspires me and creating a concept for a piece. A lot of the time, I would think of what I want to caption a piece before I’ve even drawn it. After finding imagery and developing a concept, the actual illustration can take me anywhere between 2-6 hours. This is depending on the level of detail.

MC: What are the characteristics of your designs? What sets them apart?

Zinnia: I love using colour! More recently, I’ve curated a colour palette that I stick to that automatically allows my audience to associate the image with me and my brand. At the moment, the primary colour I use is purple. I use different shades of it as well as a few more colours that compliment it in my pieces. I also add grain to all my drawings for extra depth.

MC: Speaking of colors, we love the colors you use in your digital illustration designs. We specifically love this art piece ‘You will Always Matter‘. Tell us more about your inspiration for this piece.

Zinnia: This image was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. I was becoming quite overwhelmed by the content I was seeing online. I wanted everyone connected to my page to know that no matter who you are, what your background is, or what your skin color is, you will always matter.

MC: Lastly, who are you inspired by right now?

Zinnia: My biggest inspiration is currently, and always will be, the community of artists I’ve been blessed to have met during my entire journey with my page/brand. Every single one of them has their own style and flair that they bring to their art. I’m blown away every day by the immense amount of talent present in these wonderful human beings.
