how colors affect our moods

Do you remember when mood rings were your favorite type of jewelry? If you’re like me, chances are you still wear them! Whether they work or not, that’s a whole different story. But the truth is that some colors instantly makes us feel happy, or sad. While other colors give us a sense of excitement or anxiety. To better understand how colors can affect our mood, we must first know what color psychology is. According to Wikipedia, color psychology is the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior. In other words, it’s basically the study of how colors affect our mood, and how we interact with others.

And did you know that colors also have an effect in our health? A 1974 research from Eastern Illinois University revealed how the primary colors affect our heart rate, respiration rate, and galvanic skin response (GSR). In this study, the most arousing color was red. Followed by green, yellow, and blue. There were also significant differences in arousal value found between all the colors. With this in mind, it’s pretty evident that colors do have an effect on us–both positive, and negative.

Colors and Branding

Apart from uses for health purposes, color psychology is also widely used on branding and marketing. Experts use colors to influence consumers’ emotions towards a product or service. It’s known that colors can influence our minds and play a very important role in visual communication. This is why the colors in a logo are of superior importance. A logo is the first opportunity to connect with a customer. Therefore, by using proper color psychology we can attract more customers and reach a larger audience.

In Which way Can Colors Affect our Mood?

Because colors and emotions are immensely linked, they can create certain effects in our moods and behavior. For example, warm colors often evoke feelings of happiness, joy, optimism, and energy. On the other hand, cool colors–although usually calming, can evoke sadness. In our Musa Creativa Magazine logo, the color purple is the main ingredient. While purple lies on the cool tones, it’s also a color that sparks creativity. So it’s really not sad at all! This means that perceptions of color can also be subjective. Regardless, every color has an universal meaning.

It would be totally impossible to mention each and every color with their meanings in this article. But we can certainly talk about the most popular colors that affect our mood.
