Goal setting is one of the most important parts of success. Not only does setting goals help us achieve more focus, but it also ‘moves’ the energy that we need in order to work towards them. In other words, setting goals always works in our favor! Once we accomplish our goals, a sense of satisfaction takes over us and this immediately motivates us to achieve more and more. Therefore, one of the best ways to set goals is to write them down. This way we can clearly see our progress, and we can even go back to our goals and make changes to them if we need to.

This being said, is good to mention that setting goals can help us in more ways than one. Here’s a couple of ways in which we can benefit from setting goals.
- goals help us set a clear direction towards what we want to achieve
- setting goals keeps us motivated
- goals give us a sense of confidence, hope, and self-worth

According to the 1968 goal setting theory research by Edward Locke and Gary Latham, the more specific the goal is, the harder people tend to work for it. This means that being specific is a huge part of the goal setting process. For example, one of your goals might be to sell more of your artwork. In order to achieve this, it’s best to set this goal as “sell my landscape painting for $5,000 in the next 90 days” rather than just “sell more artwork”. The more specific you are with your goal, the more chances you will have to achieve this. Keep in mind that how much clarity you put into your goals will determine how they will work.

Simple Tips for Goal Setting
You know what you want to achieve, now it’s just a matter of how you’re going to do it. According to Tony Robbins-world renowned motivational speaker, by setting goals, we can turn the invisible to visible. This is powerful! And did you know that goal setting is essential for self-motivation? So while you’re sitting there daydreaming of everything you want to do, just grab a pen and a notebook and begin writing down your goals. Write. Them. Down!

But wait, before you begin, here are some helpful tips!
- Categorize your goals. Writing down your goals by category will make it easier for you to come back to them when needed. It’s also a way of being more clear with your goals.
- Be specific. Yes! Be very specific. When do you want to see your goal completed? If it’s something tangible, write down the type and color.
- Prioritize. Now that you have your goals written down, decide which ones will go first.
- Schedule. Select a specific time frame for your goals. For all your work related goals, set a date for when these goals need to be completed.
Remember, the number one way to write down your goals is by using the S.M.A.R.T. system. This stands for:
S: specific, M: measurable, A: achievable, R: realistic, T: timely
